When your symptoms are so severe that they interfere with your functioning; when you have been stuck for a long time and do not know how to change; when change feels hopeless – these are times to consider getting professional help. Consider it when you are going through a life crisis, such as a break up of a long-term relationship or the loss of a job; at these times, you need support and may be more receptive to change.
Consider getting help if you experienced additional traumas that included emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. Finally, if you are hurting other people because of your problems, then professional help is clearly needed.
You may have serious symptoms of anxiety, such as panic attacks, multiple phobias, obsession-compulsive symptoms, or intense generalized anxiety. You may be so fearful of social situations that you avoid them, wreaking havoc on your social and work lives. If these symptoms of anxiety characterize you, getting professional help is advisable.

The therapists at Heartwood Counseling Services hold PhDs and Masters degrees in Social Work, and are licensed to practice in the state(s) in which they operate. They also have extensive training and experience in various forms of therapy to adapt to your specific treatment needs.
I’m licensed to provide psychotherapy in Georgia and Indiana. I can only see individuals for therapy who live in those States, even though it’s via video. Prior to my interests working with trauma, I helped clients with anxiety and depression associated with stressors of being a minoritized member of society. As a queer-identifying cisgender man with culturally responsive training, I am also poised to help folks navigate the nuances of living within heterosexist and white supremacist culture.
